In my many years in education, I have found one of the best ways to garner parental support within my classroom and programs has been to effectively communicate. Providing parents with a communication portal to not only know what is happening within your program but creating a timely, open avenue for parents to communicate with you is essential. This has evolved tremendously over my career with the widespread use of technology. Utilizing this technology for communication has become more apparent in the age of COVID-19. More apparent in those who are using it and those who are not. It is a must for us in education and has really opened the door more for having to be clear and concise about what is happening within our programs. Utilizing not only email and phone calls to reach parents but putting social media to use to effectively communicate and showcase what our programs are doing to our parents, fans, and supporters. Using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as informational media has really transformed what we have traditionally done in the athletic department. From an individual team perspective, all coaches are required to keep parent communication through GroupMe, an application-based communication system. This allows for coaches to communicate directly with parents as a whole or individuals.
