Volunteer opportunities are where I believe our district as a whole excels at and within athletics, we try to offer many opportunities. There are many volunteer positions available within coaching, team support, team management, fundraising, and game management. These are areas that are addressed at our seasonal meetings. Within my coaching staff, we have come up with a philosophy that the more parents are involved with minor details within the team the fewer issues they will have with major coaching responsibilities. This has proven very true over my tenure not only as an athletic director but as a coach and teacher. Let parents assume the responsibilities of filming, statistics, planning team activities outside the x’s and o’s, and they will be supportive. There are many game management positions parents love to take on, directly associated with the game or elsewhere. It really boils down to keeping them involved, too many times parents use their child’s athletics and activities to relive their own glory days. This often comes with parents who criticize your every move as a coach, keeping parents involved as part of the team is essential for building and maintain a program.
