Case Study

Learner’s Age: 16 Years Old

Grade Level: 11th Grade

Social Strengths: The student is able to advocate for herself in situations where comprehension and understanding are difficult for her. She is creative and shares her artwork with others in an attempt to build relationships with them.

Social Weaknesses: The student struggles to make connections with fellow classmates. She struggles to ask classmates for assistance and needs a considerable amount of individual support and attention to understand the basic level of content.

Emotional Needs: The student is unable to understand social norms on gaining positive attention. She strives to gain attention by coming up with mental health issues or pain management issues in order to have an opportunity for one-on-one time with the teacher.

Implemented Strategies:

  1. When working with a student who needs constant attention and affirmation, it’s important to implement strategies in order to maintain a positive relationship with a student, who obviously really needs it. The first thing I would do is reward and encourage appropriate attention-seeking behaviors from other students (Sippl, 2020). This shows the initial student that there is a way to gain the attention of others, but it is not through negative associations.

  2. In order to help the student understand content and reading, I would use NewsELA. This is a resource that takes articles or documents and adjusts them into more digestible passages for students at any level (Garrison, 2016). In general, this resource is just a good one to have on hand for the gifted and talented students, as well, since you can change the level to a harder one, too.

  3. The last strategy that I would begin with implementing would be to encourage the student to work with a partner. Oftentimes when students work together, they encourage each other to learn social skills and norms without even knowing it. Partnering in the classroom is another way to make the information more digestible (Olivieri, 2020).
